THE Senate will begin the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Dutert after the fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on July 21.
The schedule of the keenly awaited trial was announced by Senate President Francis Escudero on Monday, February 10.
In a report by The Philippine Star, Escudero reiterated that Duterte would be treated with impartiality during the impeachment trial, where senators would act as judges.
Escudero said Duterte would not be forced to attend the trial in person and would be treated fairly, relative to her position.
He also emphasized that Duterte has the right to waive her appearance unless it is deemed necessary.
In the same report, Escudero said that Duterte's direct testimony in the trial would be first subject to cross-examination before it is considered allowable.
Despite calls for an immediate start, Escudero clarified that the trial would most likely begin after the 19th Congress closes on June 30.
Escudero mentioned that permanent impeachment rules still need to be adopted, which are currently being drafted and will be discussed when the session resumes.
He added that Duterte will be given time, potentially 10 days or more if requested, to respond to the Articles of Impeachment, after which the prosecution can request a response from the chamber where both sides may face further questioning.
Moreover, if a pre-trial takes place and the impeachment proceedings occur four times in a week, Escudero estimated that the entire process would last two to three months.(Rey Martin Rio, USJ-R Comm Intern)
