VICE President Sara Duterte has revealed she is "seriously considering" a run for president in 2028, citing her concerns over the country's ongoing "backsliding."

Speaking to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Tokyo during a recent private visit to Japan, Duterte expressed her belief that the Philippines could achieve greatness, but warned that the current trajectory needed urgent change.

Duterte said the country is “continuously backsliding”, acknowledging the country’s difficulties while emphasizing the need for bold reforms.

She admitted that the path to progress would be challenging, especially when trying to get the public to understand the necessity of tough government policies.

This marked a shift from her earlier statements in which she indicated she would decide about a presidential bid in 2026.

While still uncertain about the specifics, Duterte’s recent remarks suggest that the 2028 election is a serious consideration.

In her speech, she reflected on the complexities of governance, mentioning that significant reforms would require strong leadership and public unity.

“But I believe if the people are united, that we know where we are going, our people can do it,” she said in a PhilStar report as she emphasized the need for collective effort in overcoming the nation’s challenges.

Duterte also used her trip to Japan to visit several OFW groups, with the Office of the Vice President confirming her return to Manila afterward.

In addition, Duterte expressed gratitude to the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) for its recent rally for peace, supporting President Marcos’ call to halt the impeachment proceedings against her.

INC members on Monday, January 13, organized a nationwide rally to reject the impeachment attempts, which are based on allegations of corruption and misconduct related to Duterte's tenure as Davao City mayor and Education Secretary.(CMM)
