CEBU joins the rest of the country in marking Friday, June 6, as a regular holiday in observance of Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared the holiday through Proclamation No. 911, which was signed on May 21 and released to the public on May 23.
The proclamation was issued following the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) and pursuant to Republic Act No. 9849, which designates the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, as a national holiday for Eid al-Adha.
“Eid al-Adha is one of the two greatest feasts of Islam,” the proclamation stated.
It also cites the confirmation from the NCMF that June 6, 2025, corresponds to the 10th of Zhul Hijja in the year 1446 Hijrah.
The proclamation was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on behalf of the President.
Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who demonstrated obedience to God by his willingness to sacrifice his son.
The occasion is marked by prayers, communal meals, and the ritual sharing of meat with family, neighbors, and the underprivileged.
Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the exact date of Eid al-Adha changes each year.
Eid al-Adha is considered one of the two holiest days in Islam, alongside Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
The national holiday gives Filipino Muslims across the country, including those in Cebu, a chance to freely observe the religious tradition with dignity and reverence.(TGP)
