CEBU City Mayor Nestor Archival defended the city’s decision to proceed with the Sinulog festivities despite the continuing search and rescue operations at the collapsed Binaliw landfill, which has left at least 35 people dead.

In an interview with MyTV Cebu, Archival addressed criticism over continuing the celebration, saying the city is balancing the joy and prayer of Sinulog with the grief brought by the disaster.

“Ang akoa lang naay nahitabo sa Sinulog nga kalipay ug pag-ampo nato sa Señor, unya naay nahitabo sa Binaliw, which is sadness akoa ning paninguha ug atoa ning paninguhaon nga ang syudad sa Sugbo kita nag-unite,” the mayor said.

He emphasized unity and prayer amid danger and loss.

“Kahibaw ta naa'y katalagman and atoang unite kuyog og pag-ampo sa atong Senor Santo Nino, nga atong syudad sa Sugbo tagaan og grasya nga katong naigo sa landslide para [inaudible] ug makapadayon sila sa ilang kinabuhi ug atong syudad sa Sugbo ang pagkasustinable, smart, and inclusive Cebu,” he said.(MyTVCebu)
