THE University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers barely avoided a second-straight debacle, going through some anxious moments before edging the hard-fighting University of Cebu-Lapu-Lapu Mandaue (UCLM) Baby Webmasters, 65-64, on Thursday, October 17, in the 24th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Basketball Tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Baby Lancers had to overcome 12 lead-changes and eight deadlocks, scoring a hard-earned win to recover from a shock 61-65 defeat to the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Baby Wildcats and raise their record to 4-1 (win-loss).

UCLM crashed to its fifth loss with only a solitary win to show so far.

After playing for just two minutes due to knee issues in their loss to CIT-U, Roderick Cambarijan Jr. made up for lost time as he powered the Baby Lancers with a game-high 19 points, 15 rebounds, and five steals.

Christophelcian Abellana, Kenneth Cole, and Jhunrel Dagatan added nine points each for UV, which escaped with the win despite shooting just 24-of-88 from the field.

Typifying UC’s poor field goal shooting was John Nethan Dela Torres, who just made one of his 11 attempts from the floor.

UCLM likewise had a dismal shooting from the field after making just 23 of their 65 attempts. Despite their struggles, the Baby Webmasters had a chance to win but Felix Ragasajo misfired in the game’s final possession, allowing the Baby Lancers to hang on for the hairline win.

Prince Mallorca and Dan Mitchell Ferraren paced UCLM with 13 points each.(CCM)
