THE National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) announced that a new map of the Philippines, which includes the West Philippine Sea (WPS) as part of the country’s jurisdiction, will be released soon.

NAMRIA Administrator Peter Tiangco revealed on Friday that the maps are already prepared, and the final publication is pending the issuance of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the recently signed Philippine Maritime Zones Act.

Once the IRR is released, the maps will be revised and modified accordingly before their official release.

The Philippine Maritime Zones Act, signed into law earlier on the same day by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., establishes the country’s maritime zones in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Known as Republic Act (RA) No. 12064, the law defines the geographical extent of the Philippines' maritime domain and outlines the legal powers the country can exercise over these areas, including the West Philippine Sea.

Tiangco also addressed questions about China's recent revision of its map, which expanded its claims in the South China Sea to include Taiwan and most of the West Philippine Sea.

He emphasized the significant difference between China’s revised map and the upcoming Philippine map, pointing out that the Philippines' map is based on legal principles and existing national and international laws.

He reassured the public that the map would be fully aligned with the country's legal framework, unlike China’s contested claims marked by the controversial nine-dash line, which has been widely disputed.

In addition to the signing of the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, President Marcos also affirmed the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act (RA No. 12065), which ensures the protection of the country’s sovereignty and maritime interests.

This law establishes designated sea lanes for foreign military vessels and aircraft to pass through, in line with UNCLOS and the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.

Both laws strengthen the Philippines' position in safeguarding its maritime territory and affirm the country’s commitment to international maritime law.(CMM)
