AN ECONOMIST and political newcomer has been sworn in as the new prime minister of Canada.

Mark Carney took office just days after being elected leader of the governing Liberal Party. His assumption came while Canada is facing a trade war with US President Donald Trump.

"We know that by building together, we can give ourselves far more than anyone else can take away," Carney said in a BBC report.

Carney, 59, succeeds Justin Trudeau, who stayed in office until the Liberals have chosen a new leader.

During the ceremony, Carney addressed Trump’s musings that Canada join the US as its 51s state.

“Canada will never be part of the United States,” Carney said.

He refused to comment on the timing of Canada’s October election.

Carney’s first order was to cancel the consumer carbon tax, a policy from Trudeau’s government that had become unpopular amid high inflation.

Carney also assured that his government will still address climate change, keeping a carbon tax for large polluters.

As his first trip abroad as Prime Minister, he plans to visit the UK and France next week.

Moreover, Carney said he looks forward to talking with Trump, adding that he has respect for the US and Trump.(Nikelyn Pahayahay, BiPSU Comm Intern)
