TWO celestial events - the supermoon and lunar eclipse - illuminated the night sky worldwide.

Viewers were captivated on Tuesday night when the Moon appeared larger and brighter.

Supermoons occur when the Moon is at its closest orbit to Earth. This particular event featured a partial lunar eclipse, with roughly 4% of the Moon's surface temporarily obscured by the Earth's shadow.

The eclipse was visible overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday across the UK, Europe, North and South America, and Africa.

In the UK, the eclipse took place from 01:40 BST to 05:47, peaking at 03:44. For those in the US, it was visible from 20:41 EST to 00:47, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 22:44.

This monthโ€™s full moon, referred to as the Harvest Moon, marks the second of four supermoons occurring this year.

Next year, skywatchers can look forward to two total lunar eclipses on March 14 and September 7.(CMM)
