AFTER it was reopened to the public for several months, the rubberized oval track at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) will be closed once again starting Tuesday, November 13, 2024, for major renovations.
The CCSC management announced the closure on Thursday night, November 7, via Facebook, stating that the track will remain closed until further notice as the facility undergoes extensive repairs.
This decision follows an ocular inspection earlier this week, led by City Councilor Jerry Guardo, chair of the city council’s infrastructure committee.
Guardo, accompanied by CCSC Manager Jovito Taburada and officials from the Department of Engineering and Public Works, recommended a full rehabilitation of the sports center due to significant damage sustained by the track.
Guardo emphasized the urgency of repairs, particularly to the track and drainage system.
He noted that the right side of the track, facing the grandstand, is in critical condition and requires a comprehensive overhaul to ensure safety and prevent further deterioration.
The closure and subsequent repairs come as part of the ongoing P52 million renovation project at the CCSC.
Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia had instructed contractor SBD Builders to begin work by the first week of November, with the goal of completing repairs before the Sinulog Festival in January 2025.
Although the original scope of the renovation focused on the grandstand, Guardo’s inspection revealed additional damage, particularly in the rear section of the oval.
SBD Builders confirmed that the necessary repair materials are in place, awaiting final approval from the mayor.
Despite efforts to protect the track, including using plywood during the Palarong Pambansa, the track’s condition has worsened since its reopening in June 2024.
The closure will affect regular joggers and sports enthusiasts, but the city government assured the public that the renovations will enhance the facility’s safety and functionality for future events.
The CCSC, which had been closed for 13 months for rehabilitation of the oval track, initially planned for a four to six-month closure.
The facility first closed in May 2023, with the swimming pools reopening in May 2024 for the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet.
The oval track officially reopened on June 27, just in time for the Palarong Pambansa, which was held from July 6 to 17.(MyTVCebu)
