MANILA Rep. Joel Chua has emphasized that there are currently no active efforts in the House of Representatives to initiate an impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Chua, the chairman of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, clarified this despite the ongoing probe into the use of confidential funds by Duterte’s office.
In an interview on "Storycon" on One News, Chua said that while the committee has identified potential grounds for impeachment, no formal discussions have taken place on the matter.
He added that their focus now is on the committee hearings, “which are meant to inform potential legislative actions”.
Chua, however, acknowledged that impeachment could be pursued if sufficient evidence is found.
The potential grounds for impeachment cited by Chua include betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and bribery.
The Manila lawmaker also revealed that the topic of impeachment first emerged after he was questioned about it by the media and by Duterte herself.
With just a few months left in the 19th Congress, Chua expressed doubts about whether there would be enough time to move forward with an impeachment case.
He also noted that no officials from the Office of the Vice President (OVP) have attended the committee’s hearings.
Chua warned that the seven OVP officials subpoenaed to appear could face contempt charges if they fail to attend the next session.(CMM)
