A MASS shooting at a school in Örebro, central Sweden, on Tuesday left at least 10 people dead and many others injured, marking the deadliest such incident in Swedish history.
The suspected shooter, who was not known to authorities and had no ties to gangs or ideological groups, also died.
Police have confirmed they believe the shooter acted alone, though investigations continue.
The attack occurred at Campus Risbergska, an adult education facility located on a campus with several other schools.
Emergency services were alerted around 12:30 p.m. local time. Six people, including five with gunshot wounds, were taken to a local hospital, with several undergoing surgery.
Police reported no officers were injured during an exchange of gunfire with the perpetrator.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the attack as “brutal, deadly violence” against innocent people.
He expressed condolences to the victims’ families, while Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called the event an “unspeakably sad tragedy.”
The shooting has sent shockwaves throughout the country, with Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf offering his own condolences.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of terror, with one recalling hearing three loud bangs followed by screams.
Many students were not on campus at the time, having left after a national exam.
The Risbergska school caters to students aged 20 and older, offering both high school-level and vocational courses, including programs for immigrants.
Sweden has faced increasing gun violence in recent years, often linked to gang conflicts.
In 2024, more than 40 people were killed in shootings, with authorities working to curb such incidents.(CMM)
