THE University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the University of Cebu (UC) flexed their might and collared separate titles in the 24th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Chess Tournament over the weekend at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
The Jaguars dominated the collegiate division, ruling the men and women’s competitions while the Webmasters stamped their class in the secondary division by topping the boys and girls’ categories.
Composed of Jeremy Tanudra, Jervy Villarin, Arje Villarin, Reshie Boy Polan, and Rengie Momo, the Jaguars ruled the men’s division by finishing the eight-round event with 25.5 points.
The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors ranked second with 20.5 points followed by UC with 16.0 points.
In the women’s division, USJ-R, powered by Clear Melody Villaran, Alleya Salinas, Hannah Misal, and Adelyn Bensi, collected 11.5 points. USC and USJ-R ranked second and third, respectively.
UC’s secondary girls team of Maria Kristine Lavandero, Glydel Janine Rodrigo, Loisse Antonette Lozada, and Ina Grace Caylan snatched the championship title with 16.5 points, beating USC and University of the Philippines Cebu, who tallied 12.5 and 8.5 points, respectively.
UC’s secondary boys team composed of John Dave Lavandero, Luke Symon Lozada, Sean Kenneth Cogonon, Ralph Daniel Dakay, Lance Andrei Lao, and Rico Mascarinas Jr. sealed the its title run by scoring 18 points, beating USJ-R (15 points) and the UC Lapu-Lapu Mandaue (5.0 points).(CCM)
