THE two candidates vying for the highest government position in the United States of America (U.S.A) have finally faced each other as the election draws near.

Former US President and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and US Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, wrangled over several issues during the presidential debate at The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Before the fiery debate, Harris approached Trump at his podium to shake hands.

Among the issues brought up during the almost two-hour showdown were economy, the cost of living in America, racism, and immigration.

On the question of whether it was appropriate for Trump to weigh on the racial identity of Harris, the former US President said he does not “care what she (Harris) is”.

“You make a big deal of something I couldn't care less. Whatever she wants to be is okay with me,” Trump answered.

Harris responded that it is a “tragedy” that Trump consistently “attempted to use race to divide the American people” over the course of his career.

On the issue of immigration, Trump claimed that under President Joe Biden’s watch, “millions of people are pouring into our country from prisons and jails, from mental institutions and insane asylums."

Harris also hits back at Trump on several issues, one of which is the felonies of the former president. She also called Trump a “disgrace” and that “world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump.”

Abortion, foreign policy, and inflation among others were also key issues touched on during the debate, giving the Americans a wide avenue to weigh in on who to vote among the two in the November elections this year.(LAO)
