FORMER Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co has reportedly expressed interest in opening communication with the government, Interior and Local Government Sec. Jonvic Remulla said on Wednesday, Jan. 21/

Remulla told reporters during the New Year’s call at Camp Crame that Co allegedly conveyed his intent through several priests who contacted Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla.

In a report by Philstar, the Interior secretary said the message was preliminary and remains unverified.

When asked whether the outreach was an indication that Co intended to surrender, Remulla said this was not the case. He explained that Co was seeking dialogue rather than turning himself in, noting that he does not personally know the priests involved and that the information should be treated with caution.

While welcoming any effort to communicate, Remulla stressed that Co cannot expect special treatment or attempt to influence the process. He emphasized that legal accountability cannot be avoided through negotiations or inducements.

Acting Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida said expressions of willingness to cooperate would not affect the ongoing probe into the allegations against the former lawmaker.

According to Vida, prosecutors will continue to rely solely

on the evidence presented in evaluating the complaints.

Authorities believe Co is currently in Portugal following his implication in the alleged irregularities involving flood control projects. Remulla said the government is considering alternative legal options to secure Co’s return, as the Philippines does not have an extradition agreement with Portugal.(Victoria Diana, USJ-R Comm Intern)
