TWELVE police officers were suspended by up to 90 days after they were implicated in the case of missing sabungeros.

The National Police Commission (Napolcom) said the suspension is meant to prevent the law enforcers from influencing the witnesses.

The suspended officers include Lt. Col. Ryan Eliab Orapa, Maj. Mark Philip Cimborio Almedilla, Col. Jacinto Rodriguez Malinao Jr., and nine others with ranks ranging from master sergeanys to corporals, a report by Manila Times said.

Eleven of the police officers have been charged for grave misconduct, irregularities in duty performance, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer.

Complaints of grave misconduct, grave neglect of duty, and conduct unbecoming of a police officer were filed against Malinao.

The charges were based on the testimony of the complainant and witness Julie “Totoy” Patidongan, who pointed out that these officers took part in the killings of the missing cockfighting enthusiasts and are reportedly involved in illegal activities with the alleged mastermind of this case, businessman Atong Ang.

Ang denied the accusations against him. He welcomed the filing of charges against him, saying it will give him a chance to clear his name.(Theressa Faye Lacandazo, USC Comm Intern)
