TEAM Philippines put up a solid showing and did not go home empty handed after snatching four medals in XXXIV Qosanov Memorial in Almaty, Kazakhstan over the weekend.
The Filipino tracksters narrowly missed going home with gold medals, producing three silvers and one bronze.
Janry Ubas was the country’s first medalist in the meet, winning silver in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.53 meters. The event was won by Murali Sreeshankar of India (7.94m) with Azerbaijan’s Nazim Babayev clinching the bronze with 7.48m.
Accounting for the country’s lone bronze was the mixed 4x400m relay team of Kharis Pantonial, Bernalyn Bejoy, Susan Ramadan and Hussein Loraña. The squad ended the race in three minutes and 29.92 seconds.
The two other silvers were delivered by Bejoy and Loraña.
The 23-year-old Bejoy, a five-time national champion, timed 2:12.27 in the women’s 800m run, placing behind gold medalist Irina Levina of Uzbekistan, who clocked.
Local bet Yevgeniya Krasaeva finished third in 2:12.51.
Loraña, on the other hand, recorded 1:52.69 in the men’s 800m, finishing behind eventual champion Ali Amirian of Iran, who clocked:52.09.
Kazakhstan’s Nikita Izotov took the bronze with 1:53.97. Clinton Bautista managed fourth in the men’s 100m hurdles with a time of 14.38 seconds.
Other Filipino participants were Ronnie Malipay, who ranked sixth in men’s triple jump, Anfernee Lopena (sixth, men’s 100m), Kharis Pantonial (fourth, men’s 400m Final 2), and Susan Ramadan (fifth, women’s 1500m).(CCM)
