A THIRD world war?

Labeled a “crazy cat” by Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Cavite Rep. Kiko Barzaga claimed the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) operations in the West Philippine Sea could escalate into a global conflict and called for the agency’s abolition.

Barzaga also accused the PCG of being “one of the most corrupt” government agencies, citing the awarding of high ranks to Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez and Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation Larry Gadon, who hold honorary positions of auxiliary vice admiral and rear admiral in the PCG reserve force.

In a Philstar report, PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Cayabyab clarified, “Auxiliary members are not active-duty PCG officers and their honorary ranks do not confer authority or compensation.” She added that a dialogue with Barzaga and congressional stakeholders could help clarify misconceptions and strengthen cooperation toward maritime security and safety.

Barzaga, who has been removed from the Army reserve force, faced sharp criticism for his comments, with Lacson also calling him an “annoying dog.”

Commodore Jay Tarriela defended the Coast Guard’s presence in contested waters, explaining that its patrols are intended to prevent the normalization of China’s illegal activities, protect Filipino fishermen from harassment, and expose violations of international norms.

Despite the controversy, public confidence in the PCG remains strong.

An OCTA Research survey conducted from Sept. 25 to 30 found that 75 percent of respondents were satisfied with the agency’s performance, while 71 percent expressed trust in the Coast Guard.

Barzaga’s alignment with the Duterte family, often viewed as pro-China, adds another layer of tension to the debate over the PCG’s operations in the West Philippine Sea.(MyTVCebu)
