AMID rising global uncertainties and mounting cost pressures, Filipino consumers are set to get short-term relief after manufacturers agreed to hold off price increases on basic goods, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced.

The commitment ensures that essential items will remain at current prices for at least 30 days, with some manufacturers extending the price freeze to 60 days, despite challenges linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Covered under the agreement are everyday necessities such as canned goods, bread, bottled water, coffee, condiments, soaps, and other household products—items that are most affected during periods of economic strain.

The deal was reached following discussions between industry players and Trade Secretary Cristina Roque, who emphasized the importance of protecting consumers while balancing the operational pressures faced by manufacturers.

“We recognize the financial strain faced by consumers while also acknowledging the cost pressures confronting manufacturers. Our priority remains to ensure fair and reasonable pricing,” Roque said in a Philstar report.

The DTI described the move as a collaborative effort to cushion the impact of global developments on local markets, adding that it will continue to monitor supply levels and pricing to prevent sudden spikes.

While the price freeze is temporary, the agency said it provides a critical buffer for households navigating increasing living costs.(Zsarrhied Samantha A. Tanjay, CTU-TC BAEL-ELSD Intern)
