Liloan sets up AQI-based learning arrangement protocol
THE local government unit (LGU) of Liloan has established its own protocol on school learning arrangements based on the Air Quality Index (AQI).
Mayor Aljew Frasco said the LGU takes the matter seriously as Metro Cebu continues to experience different air quality that poses risks to its residents especially to the students.
A coordination meeting was conducted by the Local Health Board, school heads in public and private schools, PTA representatives, and teachers where they came up with the local protocol.
The protocol will serve as a guide for school arrangements depending on the AQI in Metro Cebu.
“Kini nga protocol magsilbing giya sa pagpili sa angay nga learning arrangements depende sa lebel sa air pollution. Dili nato gusto nga ma-disrupt ang edukasyon sa atong mga estudyante, pero dili usab nato isakripisyo ang ilang panglawas ug kaluwasan” Frasco said.
If the air quality is good or fair, schools in all grade levels will conduct regular face-to-face classes.
Once the AQI reaches 101-150 or is classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups, classes will still go on but with strict implementation of wearing of face masks.
If the AQI ranges from 151-200 or is classified as “very unhealthy”, alternative learning arrangements will be implemented from Grade 1 to Grade 3. While Grade 4 and above may continue, provided that strict mask-wearing and adequate air-quality protective measures are implemented in schools.
“Learners with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions may opt for alternative learning arrangements, subject to appropriate medical documentation” the LGU said.
If the air quality reaches acutely unhealthy or emergency, alternative learning in all grade levels should be implemented since in-person classes are not recommended.
The mayor urged its residents to always monitor and heed the advisories of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).
To discuss the matter further, Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro has called for an open forum on air quality and class suspension on Oct. 20, at the Capitol Social Hall.
Mayors, medical experts, education and environmental agencies, schools, and parent representatives were encouraged to attend to discuss air quality standards, guidelines for class suspensions, safe learning continuity, and timely public announcements.
“Ang ato mao ang paghatag ug avenue for everyone to discuss, understand the evidence, and work towards practical guidelines” Baricuatro said.(MyTVCebu)
