“THERE’S nothing we can do.”
Before a huge crowd in Hong Kong, former President Rodrigo Duterte said this as he expressed readiness to face arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“If this is really my fate in life, that’s okay, I will accept it,” Duterte addressed a crowd of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong on Sunday, March 9.
The former president and his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, flew to Hong Kong to attend a thanksgiving event organized by the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
The senatorial candidates of PDP-Laban were also introduced during the event.
The Dutertes’ trip sparked speculations that the former president was fleeing the country after an arrest warrant issued against him by the ICC.
Philippine authorities have denied that an arrest warrant has been issued against the former President.
The Vice President was the first to address the crowd and was followed by the elder Duterte, who then talked about the supposed arrest warrant.
"Assuming na totoo totoo talaga yang naririnig ninyo, bakit ko ginagawa yan para sa sarili ko? Para sa pamilya ko? Para sa inyo at mga anak sa ating bayan!"
The ICC continues to investigate Duterte over alleged extrajudicial killings by police and unidentified gunmen, dating back to the former President’s time as mayor of Davao City.
