THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) is set to provide reliable and affordable water supply to around 1,500 households in the upland sitios of Mahayahay in Barangay Busay and Calvary in Barangay Apas in Cebu City.
Long considered as "thirsty" areas due to their difficult access to water, these sitios will soon benefit from a pipeline expansion that aims to reach underserved communities.
However, the project has faced initial delays as portions of the pipeline must pass through privately owned roads and areas under the jurisdiction of the Cebu Provincial Government.
Despite these setbacks, MCWD remains committed to completing the expansion to improve water access for these residents.
To move forward, MCWD secured the necessary permits from private landowners.
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia also granted approval for excavation and pipelaying on Capitol-owned roads after Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia personally requested her endorsement.
MCWD General Manager Edgar Donoso, during a recent visit to City Hall, thanked Mayor Garcia for helping push the request through and expressed appreciation to Governor Garcia for supporting the water districtโs expansion plans.
With pipelaying scheduled for completion next month, residents in these mountain communities, many of whom have never been connected to the water grid, will finally receive a reliable supply.
This will be made possible through water sourced from the Lusaran bulk water project.
MCWD said it remains focused on widening its service coverage through more expansion works and by tapping additional water sources to meet the growing needs of the public.
MCWD is agovernment-owned and controlled corporation that provides water services to Metro Cebu.
Its franchise area includes Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, and the municipalities of Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela, and Cordova. MCWD also supplies water to parts of Talisay City and Minglanilla.
It sources water from deep wells, surface water, and bulk water suppliers to serve the increasing demand across its service areas.(MyTVCebu)
