POWER consumers in residential areas of Metro Cebu can heave a sigh of relief as Visayan Electric announced a P2.36 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) reduction in their electricity rates for October and November.

This brings the total rate down to P11.16/kWh. For households consuming 200kWh, this decrease translates to savings of up to P472 on their next bill.

In a statement to the press on Tuesday, October 15, reduction is attributed to lower electricity prices in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

This is along with the completion of a four-month staggered payment plan for WESM dues, as mandated by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

In June, the ERC required distribution utilities to spread the unusually high WESM charge, triggered by Red and Yellow Alerts last summe, over four months, from June to September.

With the full settlement of these charges, the additional 92-centavo per kWh cost added during this period has been lifted.

Despite the lower rates, Visayan Electric President and COO Raul Lucero advised consumers to remain conscious of their energy use as the holiday season nears.

“Our data shows that energy consumption increases in the last quarter of the year due to holiday celebrations and parties. My advice to our consumers is to consistently practice energy-saving measures,” Lucero said.

“Even small efforts, like avoiding frequent opening of the refrigerator, can make a big difference,” he added.

With the holiday season fast approaching, Visayan Electric also urged consumers to prioritize safety when installing Christmas lights and decorations.

The company recommends buying lights from trusted brands and ensuring they are turned off when leaving the house.(MyTVCebu)
