THE number of Filipino couples opting to care for pets instead of having children is increasing, a study by the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) showed.
For these couples, pets are more than just furry friends these days but are integral members of the family.
“Many Filipino couples prefer raising pets over having children due to economic reasons,” Quiray said in a report by Philippine Star.
Speaking at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing on Monday, March 24, Quiray said couples now prioritize securing their economic situation before considering having children.
“That’s why this trend is becoming more common,” she said.
Beyond the economic situation, pets serve as a source of emotional support, making this another significant factor in fur parenting.
The CPD study also indicated a decline in the fertility rate, now at 1.9 children per woman, falling below the replacement fertility level of 2.1, according to reports from the Philippine Star.
“This means that, at present, Filipino parents are not reproducing at a rate that replaces the population. This is largely due to improved family planning methods” Quiray added.
Filipino women are increasingly using contraceptives, with pills being the most preferred method, followed by injectables.( Mary Grace Fegarido, USJ-R Comm Intern)
