QUALIFIED senior citizens in Lapu-Lapu City received cash assistance under the Expanded Centenarians Act on Thursday, October 23, at the newly inaugurated Senior Citizen Community Care Center in Plaza Rizal.

During the event, 170 beneficiaries aged 80, 85, 90, and 95 each received P10,000 under Republic Act 11982 or the Expanded Centenarians Act, which took effect on March 17, 2024. The law provides P10,000 to Filipinos reaching these milestone ages, while centenarians receive P100,000.

Vice Mayor Celedonio “Celsi” Sitoy, who celebrated his 85th birthday last year, was among the recipients.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) organized the distribution, its fourth payout this year, with more scheduled in November and December.

Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan said the cash assistance recognizes the invaluable contributions of the city’s senior citizens while also providing financial support.

She suggested holding future payouts in individual barangays to reduce crowding and long queues.

CSWDO Senior Citizens Focal Person Jonah Nuñez said the activity officially started at 11 a.m., but many seniors arrived as early as 6 a.m. to secure their place in line.

Those who missed the event can still claim their cash gifts at the NCSC Capitol office.

In an earlier interview, NCSC Central Visayas Executive Director Joy Tabo-Tabo encouraged other towns and cities to submit their lists of qualified seniors so more beneficiaries can receive the program’s cash assistance.

She clarified that the P10,000 grant is a non-repayable benefit available to all qualified Filipino citizens regardless of financial status.

The Expanded Centenarians Act aims to provide support to Filipinos who reach milestone ages. This year, the program targets more than 275,000 senior citizens nationwide, with total payouts exceeding P2.9 billion.(MyTVCebu)
