THE Cebu Provincial Government is closely monitoring the impact of continuous rains that triggered a landslide in Talisay City on Wednesday, which led to the suspension of classes in several areas across the province the following day.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Dennis Pastor said Gov. Pamela Baricuatro ordered all Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (LDRRMOs) to provide real-time updates from their respective localities.

“As per instructions from Gov. Pam, we are closely coordinating with all LDRRMOs in the province to provide status reports from their respective areas,” Pastor said Wednesday night.

On Thursday, Baricuatro told MyTV Cebu she had asked residents to regularly check with their local disaster offices for the latest advisories.

She added that she and her team are working to ensure those affected by the bad weather receive the assistance they need.

Baricuatro was attending a groundbreaking event in Lapu-Lapu City on Thursday.

Landslide and no classes

In Sitio Quadra, Barangay Lagtang, Talisay City, a landslide damaged a residential house and forced the evacuation of five residents: Rosalina Edgloria, 81; Vicente Edgloria, 82; Chrisna Edgloria, 18; Diana Jean Cabusas, 19; and Jonel Enso, 30.

They are now staying with relatives and did not require rescue assistance, according to the Talisay City's LDRRMO.

As rains continued to affect various parts of Cebu, at least 20 local government units suspended classes at all levels as a precautionary measure.

These include the cities of Mandaue and Bogo, and the towns of Daanbantayan, Santa Fe, Samboan, Medellin, Alcoy, Tabogon, Santander, San Remigio, Minglanilla, Malabuyoc, Sogod, Tuburan, Tabuelan, Dalaguete, Oslob, Ginatilan, and Badian.

In Alcantara, only afternoon classes were suspended.

Safety updates

The Provincial Government, through the PDRRMO, remains on high alert and is closely monitoring areas vulnerable to landslides and floods.

Local officials have been advised to activate emergency protocols, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas.

Relief supplies, monitoring of river levels, and logistical preparations are ongoing in coordination with national agencies.

Weather update

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Tropical Depression Crising remained steady in strength as it moved north-northwest over the waters east of Catanduanes.

Crising carried maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h and gusts reaching up to 70 km/h.

While Cebu remains outside any Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal, the enhanced southwest monsoon continues to bring light to moderate, occasionally heavy, rainfall across the province.(MyTVCebu)
