A FALSE fire alarm at Ninoy Aquino International Airport triggered a temporary halt in operations early Tuesday, delaying 59 flights and briefly grounding both passenger and cargo planes.
The alarm went off at approximately 1:24 a.m. at the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) Air Traffic Management Center in Pasay City. Authorities immediately implemented contingency measures, activated safety protocols, and temporarily held departures.
Normal operations resumed at 2:50 a.m., with all restrictions lifted by 3:16 a.m.
“A total of 59 commercial and cargo flights were delayed by an average of 45 minutes before being cleared for departure. Seven arriving flights were affected,” CAAP reported in a statement.
In an Inquirer report, CAAP Director Raul Del Rosario praised the swift response of air traffic controllers, saying, “This incident underscores our continued commitment to maintaining the highest standards of aviation safety and readiness.” He added that the quick actions of the controllers ensured flight safety was never compromised and that airport operations returned to normal immediately.
The aviation authority is conducting an internal investigation to determine the cause of the false alarm.(MyTVCebu)
