THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) has disqualified an additional 23 individuals who filed certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the May 2025 Senate race, declaring them as nuisance candidates.
Following the latest batch of disqualifications, the total number of nuisance senatorial candidates for the upcoming elections is now at 70.
The Comelec's 1st and 2nd Divisions each issued rulings on the new batch of disqualified aspirants.
The 1st Division declared three individualsโPrimo Puso Aquino, Berteni Causing, and Alice Jumalonโas nuisance candidates for failing to meet the necessary qualifications for the Senate race.
The 2nd Division, meanwhile, disqualified 20 others, including Miranda Cadion, Melissa Fortes, Deviendo Biazon, Epifanio Perez, and Bethsaida Lopez, among others.
These individuals were deemed to have filed frivolous or non-serious candidacies, a decision that is part of the Comelec's ongoing effort to ensure only qualified candidates are included in the race.
This latest development follows an earlier ruling where the Comelec had already disqualified 47 other senatorial aspirants.
During the filing period for COCs, which ran from October 1 to 8 at the Manila Hotel Tent City, the Comelec received 183 COCs for the Senate.
As of now, 66 of the 183 candidates have been included in the partial list of official senatorial candidates for the 2025 elections.
The Comelec continues to evaluate the remaining filings, with further announcements expected as it finalizes the list of qualified contenders.(CMM)
