UV wins 4th straight, upends UC

THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers stayed hot, rolling to another win by outlasting the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 80-65, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 26 collegiate basketball tournament on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Green Lancers, who are gunning for a fourth straight title, pulled away in the final half to emerge victorious in the so-called ‘Sanciangko Clasico’.

The match was close early with the first quarter ending at 19-all. Neither team gave an inch in the second period, leading to a 38-all standoff at the half.

Things changed in the third period when UV mounted a huge run and broke the game wide open after building a 63-52 lead going into the final period.

The Green Lancers would then lead by as many as 15 points on their way to snatching their fourth straight win to improve to 4-1 (win-loss).

With the streak, the Green Lancers tied the Benedicto College Cheetahs and University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors at the No. 1 spot with identical 4-1 (win-loss) records.

UV has not lost since opening the season with a shock 68-81 loss to USC.

Kent Ivo Salarda and Raul Gentallan scored 21 and 18 points, respectively, to lead UV. Albert John Sacayan added 14 markers.

Ray Charles Libatog finished with 19 points, Luther Gabriel Leonard chipped in 16 and Joei Perino contributed 10 for the Webmasters, who suffered theur second defeat in six outings.(CCM)
