THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers kept their flickering playoffs alive after they nailed an 84-79 win over the Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges (CRMC) Mustangs in the college division of the 24th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, October 29, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Panthers picked up just their second in five games as they joined the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats at fifth place in the team standings.

Tournament format states that only the top four teams after the elimination round will advance to the quarterfinals. Currently in the running for a Top 4 finish are the defending champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers (5-0), the University of Cebu Webmasters (4-0), the Benedicto College Cheetahs (3-0), and the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars (3-3).

Neon Chavez led USPF’s much-needed win with a 23-point, nine-rebound, four-assist performance. Paul Daniell Apolonio helped USPF’s cause by adding 16 points while Peter John Peteros and John Miguel Maglasang each had 10 markers.

Keaton Kyle Taburnal finished with a game-high 28 points to lead CRMC, which also got 13 and 11 points from Redjhee Ricimiento and Earl Laniton, respectively.

The loss further pulled the Mustangs down the standings with a dismal 1-4 slate.(CCM)
