LAST year’s losing finalists University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters closed out their first-round campaign with a 69-61 spanking of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats on Thursday night, Oct. 23, at the Cebu Coliseum.

With the win, the Webmasters emerged as the frontrunner in the college division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 50 Basketball Tournament after ending the first round with six wins and one loss.

Actually, defending champion University of the Visayas also ended the first round with a 6-1 (win-loss) slate but the Webmasters secured the top spot after beating the Green Lancers in their Oct. 12 meeting.

While UC is sitting pretty in first place, CIT-U is mired at the bottom of the standings.

The loss pulled the Wildcats down to 1-5 to join the University of the Philippines Cebu Fighting Maroons at the bottom.

Carlo Salgarino keyed UC’s victory by collecting 14 points, eight rebounds, and a block. The rookie big went 7-of-12 from the floor.

Ricofer Sordilla added 10 points while Mark John Ecal and Neon Chavez pitched in a combined 15 markers.

CIT-U was led by Josaiah Villamayor, who piled up 15 points, 14 rebounds, two steals, and a block. Serafin Duarte added 11 points for the Wildcats, who failed to recover from a 26-43 deficit at the bend.(CCM)
