Suganob moves up to No. 1 spot in WBO rankings

REGIE “Filipino Phenom” Suganob is now the No. 1 contender in the junior flyweight division of the World Boxing Organization (WBO).

The latest rankings showed Suganob as one of only two Filipino boxers who are in the Top 10 of the 108-pound division. The other Filipino fighter in the Top 10 is Arvin Magramo.

The rise of the 28-year-old Suganob came more than a month before his highly anticipated rematch with South African Sivenathi Nontshinga.

Nonsthinga is at No. 12 in the WBO rankings.

Suganob, the prized fighter of PMI Bohol Boxing Gym, and Nontshinga are set to face each other on Sept. 12 in Bohol. The rematch is an International Boxing Federation (IBF) world junior flyweight title eliminator which means the winner will earn a shot at current champion Thanongsak Simsri of Thailand.

Suganob’s holds an impressive 18W-1L, 7KOs record. The Boholano boxer’s lone loss was dealt by Nontshinga, giving him an added motivation in their second encounter.

Nontshinga defeated Suganob via unanimous decision to clinch the IBF world junior flyweight title in 2023 in East London, Eastern Cape.

The 27-year-old Nontshinga has 14 wins, 11 by knockout, and two losses.(CCM)
