TEAM Philippines remained without a gold in the 2024 Paris Paralympics after para swimmer Angel Otom failed to secure a podium finish in the women's 50m butterfly - S5 final.

Otom, the 21-year-old Sports Science student from the University of the Philippines, finished the race in 45.78 for a fifth-place finish. Otom fell just 2.08 seconds short of making the podium in the race that was won by China’s Lu Dong.

Dong shattered her own Paralympic record and the world record set by He Shenggao (39.32) by clocking 38.17 seconds to win the gold. Shenggao snatched silver with 38.98 while Turkiye's Sevilay Ozturk pocketed the bronze with 43.70.

Otom may have failed to win a medal but her Paralympics debut was a solid one as she made it to the final round in all of her two events.

Otom also made it to the women's 50m backstroke final where she finished sixth. Lu Dong also topped the event.

Aside from Otom, also out of medal contention are swimmer Ernie Gawilan, archer Agustina Bantiloc and taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin.
