A RESCUE dog from California named Petunia was hailed as the winner of the 2025 “World's Ugliest Dog” contest.

In a report by Newsweek, Petunia with her owner Shannon Nyman claimed the title of the 50-year-old competition that commemorates unconventional-looking dogs.

The coronation was on August 8 at the Sonoma Marin Fair.

The contest serves a deeper purpose than just pure entertainment. It advocates dog adoption and celebrates the beauty of all animals regardless of their looks.

The competition is a platform to help shift public perception about what makes dogs deserving of affection and homes, possibly influencing adoption decisions nationwide. It highlights rescue dogs and shelter animals.

Event organizers underscored that "pedigree does not define the pet.”

The contest is open to canines of all breeds and sizes with unconventional looks, adhering to strict health protocols.

Every participant must present veterinary paperwork confirming their health status before their arrival, with added veterinary checks conducted on-site before the start of the competition, based on event details.

The contest features pet care information sessions, and adoption resources, creating a comprehensive celebration of animal welfare.

Owners and their pets participating in the contest take the floor to highlight their unique beauty to the judges, media, hosts, and fans. Participants often include animals with unique appearances like missing teeth, deformed limbs, dangling tongue, fur challenges, and missing eyes.

Organizers describe the show as "a wonderful show of pageantry and pride.”
