SIGNS that he is on the road to recovery, Pope Francis finally concelebrated a Mass on Sunday, the Vartican announced.

The Vatican released a photo of the 88-year-old Pontiff attending Mass inside Rome's Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for a respiratory infection.

The image shows Pope Francis seated in a wheelchair, wearing his white papal vestments while praying before an altar.

The photo was taken during a Mass that Francis, concelebrated.

As one of the priests who presided over the Mass, Francis has gone beyond just participating in Mass or receiving the Eucharist as he has been doing in the past weeks.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that the Pope is in stable condition and responding well to medical care.

“The Pope had a restful night and slept well. This morning, he read the newspapers and had breakfast as usual. Therapy continues. There will be another update at 5 pm.” Bruni said in a CNN report.

While the pontiff's health has shown improvement, experts note that recovery may take time due to his advanced age and pre-existing conditions.

Pope Francis had part of his lung removed in his youth due to a severe infection, making respiratory illnesses a serious concern.

The pope’s absence from public duties has sparked discussions about a possible resignation, similar to his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who stepped down in 2013. However, Vatican officials have firmly denied such rumors, stating that Pope Francis remains committed to his leadership.

Francis expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he has received from Catholics worldwide.

"I thank you all for your prayers, and I thank those who assist me with such dedication. I know that many children are praying for me; some of them came here today to 'Gemelli' as a sign of closeness. Thank you, dearest children! The Pope loves you and is always waiting to meet you," Francis said in a audio message that was played for thousands gathered at St. Peter’s Square.

The Vatican has yet to announce when Pope Francis will be discharged, but officials remain hopeful that he will resume his regular activities soon.(Justin Quidol, BiPSU Comm Intern)
