YOUTH prevailed over experience when the 27-year-old Jake Paul defeated the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson via unanimous decision in their eight-round exhibition duel on Saturday (Philippine time), November 16, at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
All three judges scored the bout for Paul, 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73.
Statistics showed that Paul threw 278 punches and landed 78. Showing that age has certainly slowed him down, Tyson threw just 97 punches with only 18 connections.
Paul improved to 11W-1L while Tyson dropped to 50-7.
Though he failed to snatch a win in his first fight in almost 20 years, Tyson was satisfied with his performance.
“I’m absolutely happy. I didn’t prove nothing to anybody, just to myself,” Tyson said.
The two figured in a tension-filled weigh-in where Tyson slapped Paul in the face for stepping on his foot.
But after the fight, Paul had nothing but kind words for the boxing legend.
“First and foremost, Mike Tyson, it’s such an honor. I was inspired by him, I wouldn’t be here without him. He’s an icon. It was really tough, like I expected it to be. He’s exactly what I thought, one of the greatest to ever do it. This guy’s always had my back. It’s just an honor to be in the ring. I tried to hurt him a little bit, but I was afraid he was going to hurt me,” said Paul.
As the clock ticked down to the final seconds, Paul showed his immense respect to his legendary opponent by dropping his two hands and bowing to Tyson.
“I wanted to give the fans a show but I didn’t want to hurt someone I didn’t need to be hurt,” said Paul.(CCM)
