A 10-STORY hotel in Argentina collapsed, killing one person and trapping nine other people beneath the rubble.

The Dubrovnik Hotel in the coastal city of Villa Gessell, 350 kilometers south of the capital Buenos Aires, was under renovation when it crumbled Tuesday morning, causing the death of an 80-year-old man according to Javier Alonso, security minister for Buenos Airesโ€™s province.

There was also a woman who was able to survive the incident, a report by CNN stated.

Among the missing persons believed to be buried beneath the collapsed building are presumably masons who are working on the hotelโ€™s modification.

Firefighters and other rescuers were trying to remove the mangled metals, rubble, and debris to look for survivors while waiting for the canine unit and structural engineers to respond and evaluate the site.

The restoration work on the site had already been halted since August after authorities found out that the renovations had no proper permits. Allegedly, the hotel was in defiance of the suspension order as neighbors reported works were still ongoing.

A prosecutor already opened an investigation to find the cause of why the structure collapsed.

Alfonso on a local radio said four bricklayers working there tried to escape but had been detained by police personnel.

The hotel opened in 1986 and was undergoing modifications and restorations.(LAO)
