REPAIR works on the rubberized track of the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) were supposed to start after the 2024 Pasigarbo sa Sugbo. It’s been a week since the event passed but repairs have yet to commence, and the damage on some sections of the track has become increasingly noticeable.
Initially, Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia reported that SBD Builders, the company contracted for the repairs, was out of the country. But on Friday, September 8, Garcia revealed that Shaun Doherty of SBD Builders has now arrived in the Philippines.
Garcia told MyTV Cebu that despite this update, the finalization of the repair schedule is still planned for Monday with works expected to begin soon after.
The repairs are designed to address damage sustained during recent events and fix measurement discrepancies that were discovered during the Palarong Pambansa in July.
The work, which will be carried out in sections, is covered under a warranty provided by SBD Builders. No payments have been made yet, as the City Government will only disburse funds once Garcia is satisfied with the completed repairs.
During the renovation period, the CCSC will remain partially operational. While the track is being repaired, other facilities, such as the multipurpose area, badminton court, and swimming pool, will remain open.
The CCSC had previously closed for over a year starting in May 2023 for extensive renovations in preparation for the national sporting event, reopening on July 18. Since then, the center has generated P1.5 million in revenue from its various facilities.
The track operates daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with rates varying depending on the time of day. The swimming pool, open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., also has different rates for students, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and senior citizens.
Garcia aims to complete the renovations within a month, including time for rubber laying and curing. He will work with contractors and engineers to finalize the repair plan.
In July, it was reported that the city allocated P57 million for the track’s rehabilitation. Despite this significant allocation, Garcia has noted that further repairs are needed due to recent damage.(MyTVCebu)
