THERE was nary a trace of disapproval when CJ Opiaza was crowned as Miss Grand Philippines 2024 on Sunday night, September 29, Newport Performing Arts Theater.
What pageant enthusiasts dissented was the show’s music selection.
The five-hour beauty tilt featured a Filipiniana theme, allowing the candidates to honor their respective regions in their national costumes.
Organizers decided to go with OPM classics that give the show its 1970s to 80s disco fever vibes.
The national costume competition drew mixed reactions when organizers used the song “Bonggahan” by Sampaguita.” Because of the song, some fans compared the pageant to a “barangay pageant” or “bar” but some also found it “cute.”
Some watchers also complained that the pageant did not promote women empowerment when “Katawan,” “Nanggigigil,” “Babae,” and “Legs” were played during the swimsuit portion.
Technical issues also marred the event, including interruptions in the livestream due to unspecified “policy violations.”
Viewers noted audio problems during key segments, such as the national costume competition and the Top 10 announcement, as well as concerns over the stage design.
As of now, the national organization has not responded to these criticisms.
The pageant was led by organizer and franchise holder ALV Group of Companies, led by its president Arnold Vegafria
Opiaza, meanwhile, is set to depart for Thailand for the Miss Grand International pageant, which kicks off on October 5.(CMM)
