THE New York Knicks emerged as this year’s NBA Cup champions after they whipped the San Antonio Spurs, 124-113, in their sudden-death title match on Wednesday (Philippine time), Dec. 17.

The Knicks battled back from double-digit deficits to become the third team to win the Cup after the Los Angeles Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks.

OG Anunoby finished with 28 points, Jalen Brunson had 25 while Karl-Anthony Towns put in 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks, who led for most of the game before pulling away in the fourth quarter.

New York won despite the premature exit of Towns, who left late in the third quarter due to a calf injury.

Dylan Harper topped the Spurs with 21 points while Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox pitched in 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Despite the presence of the towering Wembanyama, the Spurs were badly outrebounded, 42-59.

Leading the Knicks’ strong rebounding effort was reserve Mitchell Robinson, who finished with 15 rebounds.

San Antonio built an 89-79 lead with 2:38 left in the third quarter. The Spurs were still ahead by five, 94-89, at the start of the final canto before the Knicks went on a huge run and took the lead for good, 100-95.(CCM)
