SEN. Imee Marcos has announced her decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming May 2025 elections, a choice she believes is necessary to protect her younger brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and her friends from the intense scrutiny and harsh criticisms of the political landscape.

During a press conference on Monday, September 30, Senator Marcos expressed her concerns about the brutality of election campaigns.

She described it as “tough, and sometimes the words spoken are deeply hurtful”.

She elaborated on her motivations, saying she wants to ensure her brother isn’t put in a difficult position.

She shared that her brother is already anxious about potential fallout.

Senator Marcos deemed this decision best even if it meant facing the campaign alone.

Two days prior, Senator Marcos shared a video confirming her choice to pursue an independent path after being included in the administration's senatorial slate under the Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas banner.

When asked if she was withdrawing from her brother's Senate slate, she affirmed, "Yes, isn’t it obvious?"

Reflecting on the family dynamics, she noted her

mother is “saddened by this decision and asked why she had to take such a step.”

She explained that it's ultimately better for the family and the greater good.

Senator Marcos said this way, they can communicate with all sectors and negotiate with various groups as this aligns with her father's teachings: “one nation, one spirit. We must not allow ourselves to be divided."

Senator Marcos emphasized the sacrifices involved in her decision but maintained that independence is essential for effective governance and collaboration across party lines.

When asked about the potential rift between her brother and Vice President Sara Duterte, she indicated that her priority is her independent candidacy, rather than mediating their relationship.

President Marcos has publicly stated that he supports his sister’s decision to withdraw from the slate.
