THE grandparents of a two-year-old boy were among the four persons who were arrested for the toddler’s death in the French Alps in July 2023.

The death of Emile Soleil made headlines in France, and the arrest of his grandparents provided a sudden twist in the case.

Prosecutors reported that aside from Philippe and Anne Vedovini, Emile’s grandparents, the other two individuals arrested on murder suspicion are the grandparents’ children.

In a report by BBC, the arrested individuals were taken into custody on alleged voluntary homicide and concealment of a corpse.

Emile was last seen walking alone on a village street on July 8, 2023, shortly before his grandmother reported him missing.

The toddler reportedly disappeared from his grandparents’ home in the remote hamlet of Haut-Vernet during a family gathering.

A massive search operation involving local police, soldiers, and sniffer dogs then followed but failed to locate the two year old.

In the previous year, a hiker discovered remains of Emile’s skull and some of his clothing around the area from where he was last seen.

However, prosecutors initially stated that the evidence could not conclusively determine the cause of death, leaving open possibilities of an accident.

The case had largely gone silent until the arrest on Tuesday, which have reignited public interest and media coverage across France.

Aix-en-Provence chief prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon said the arrests came after months of investigative work and evidence analysis.

French media reported that police also conducted searches at the grandparents’ home and seized one of their vehicles as part of the ongoing investigation.

Individuals in France can be detained for questioning in a police investigation for potential crime involvement, but the detention does not automatically lead to legal action.
