A HEADY big man and an explosive guard are the new faces who made it to the 18-man pool of a Gilas Pilipinas squad set to compete in the opening window of the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers.
Six-foot-10 Fil-Am center Quentin Millora- Brown and 6-foot Spanish-Filipino guard Juan Gomez De Liano are part of the pool, which will be reduced to 12 in time for Gilas’ due with Guam on Nov. 28.
Gilas will leave for Guam on Nov. 25. The two nations will face again on Dec. 1.
Interestingly, part of the pool is Kai Sotto, the 7-foot-3 center who is still recuperating from an ACL injury. Sotto went down while playing for the Koshigaya Alphas in Japan B.League last January.
Sotto will not be playing yet but is opting to join Gilas in the Guam trip as his way of supporting the team, Gilas head coach Tim Cone revealed.
Also part of the pool are naturalized player Justin Brownlee, Dwight Ramos, June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez, Kevin Quiambao, Carl Tamayo, Scottie Thompson, Chris Newsome, AJ Edu, Japeth Aguilar, Troy Rosario, Calvin Oftana, and RJ Abarrientos.
Completing the pool are Jamie Malonzo, who had a short stint in the B.League, and Gilas’ other naturalized player Ange Kouame.(CCM)
