Gilas looks to recover, battles Kazakhstan in Asian Games

GILAS Pilipinas eyes for a quick recovery when it battles Kazakhstan in the 20th Asian Games men’s basketball in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Tip-off for the crucial match is at 6 p.m.

Gilas is in a must-win situation after dropping its first assignment against Bahrain, 85-89, last Friday.

“We’re very disappointed in the way we played. We expect a lot more from ourselves,” Cone said in a post-game interview posted at One Sports’ website.

The defeat put to waste the solid effort of Calvin Oftana and Adrian Nocum.

Oftana exploded for 31 points while Nocum marked his Gilas debut with a 14-point, seven-rebound, five-assist, one-block performance.

The only other Gilas player to score in double figures was Justine Baltazar, who finished with 10 points. Sedrick Barefield, Brandon Bates, and Jerrick Ahanmis were also held scoreless in the defeat.

If Gilas has to recover, it must get efficient production from other reliables.

Against Bahran, RJ Abarrientos scored just four points while Robert Bolick went scoreless in 13 minutes of playing time.

Kazakhstan is also in a must-win situation after dropping its opening game earlier against China, 61-99.(CCM)
