MEDAL remains elusive for Team Philippines as swimmer Ernie Gawilan fell out of the top three in the men’s 400m Freestyle-S7 finals of the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games at Paris La Defense Arena late Monday, September 2.
The 33-year-old Gawilan settled for just sixth place with a time of 5 minutes and 3.18 seconds.
Gawilan, a native of Davao City, lost steam in the final round after putting up a strong showing in the preliminaries where he ranked third with a time of 5:00.03.
Italy’s Federico Bicelli (4:38.70) won the gold medal while Ukraine’s Andrii Trusov (4:40.17) and Argentina’s Inaki Basiloff (4:40.27) snatched the silver and bronze honors, respectively.
The three-time Paralympian Gawilan also competed in the men’s 200m IM-SM7 but did not make it to the final round after ranking dead-least in the heats.
Gawilan is the third Filipino to get the boot in the competition after taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin and archer Agustina Bantiloc.
Still in contention for Team Philippines are wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan, swimmer Angel Otom and javelin thrower Cendy Asusano.(MyTVCebu)
