FILIPINO boxer Jayson Mama suffered a controversial loss in Puerto Rico on Thursday (PH time), October 31.

Mama of the General Santos City-based Sanman Boxing Gym bowed to hometown bet Juan Carlos Camacho via split decision for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) North American Boxing Organization (NABO) flyweight title.

The loss was deemed controversial as Mama floored Camacho twice but still ended up losing in the main event of the card put up by Miguel Cotto Promotions.

The card served as the highlight of the ongoing annual WBO Convention.

One of those who expressed frustration over Mama’s bitter defeat was Sanman’s top honcho JC Manangquil.

“Wala gyud lami panagsa (It’s disappointing sometimes),” said Manangquil in a Facebook post.

Mama, a former world title challenger, suffered just his second defeat. He has 20 wins, 10 coming by way of knockout.

The 22-year-old Mama had a chance to win a world title in 2022 but lost to Sunny Edwards of England for the IBF world flyweight title.

Despite the recent loss, Manangquil still believes that the future remains bright for Mama as he offers some comforting words for his ward.

“Stay positive and be proud of your performance. God has a plan. You won the fight, and lots of people know it. Come back stronger,” Manangquil said.

It was Camacho’s 18th win in 19 fights.(CCM)
