THE dry spell continued for Alex Eala after she crashed out of the ITF 2nd Empire Women’s Indoor 2025 in Trnava, Slovakia on Friday (Philippine time), March 7.
The 19-year-old Eala was eliminated after absorbing a three-set loss to unseeded Valentina Ryser of Switzerland in their second-round duel.
The top Filipino tennis player, ranked No. 140 in the world, got off to a good start and won the first set, 6-4. Eala, however, lost steam in the succeeding rounds, dropping the second set, 2-6, and failed to recover after also falling in the third set, 2-6.
Eala made it to the second round after opening her campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz.
With the early exit, Eala remains title-less this year. Her best showing so far was in the Canberra 125 last January, where she made it to the semifinal round.
Eala will be back in action in less than two weeks after she earned a wildcard berth in the Miami Open.
The Miami Open is scheduled on March 16 to 30 in Florida.(CCM)
