ALEX Eala saw action for the first time since her historic stint in the Miami Open as she started her campaign in the 2025 Oeiras Ladies Open on Monday (Philippine time), April 14, in Portugal.

Eala’s debut in the tournament against Dutch Anouk Koevermans was cut short as games played on the outdoor clay court were suspended due to heavy rainfall.

The Filipino tennis ace was ahead in the match, 1-0, when the game was halted. Eala took the opening set, 6-3, but Koevermans was ahead in set two, 4-2, when the game was suspended.

The 19-year-old Eala is coming off a magical run in the Miami Open where she competed as a wildcard entry. She defeated Grand Slam winners before bowing in the semifinals against world No. 4 Jessica Pegula.

While she was a wildcard entry in her stellar run in the Miami Open, Eala is the No. 1 seed in the Portugal tournament, which is a WTA 125 event.

Eala came into the tournament enjoying a career-high WTA ranking as she surged to No. 72 following her stellar Miami Open campaign.

The 21-year-old Koevermans, Eala’s first-round opponent in Oeiras Open main draw first round, is ranked No. 182 in the world.

Eala will also compete in doubles in Oeiras, joining forces with Katie Volynets.
