Eala drops to 45th in WTA live ranking
ALEX Eala is projected to drop outside the Top 40 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
After a fourth-round exit at the Miami Open, Eala fell all the way down to No. 45 in the WTA live ranking.
Eala entered the Miami Open, a WTA 1000 event, at No. 29–a career-high. She failed to get past the quarterfinal round after losing badly to Czech Karolina Muchova, 0-6, 2-6. The loss denied 20-year-old Eala from duplicating her semifinal appearance in the Miami Open last year.
By falling to Muchova, Eala dropped to 0-12 against Czech opponents.
It was through last year’s Miami Open that Eala made it to the Top 100 in the WTA ranking.
However, the points that Eala earned from last year’s Miami Open has already expired, leading to her significant drop in the WTA live ranking.
Under the WTA’s 52-week ranking system, players lose the points they earned from the same event the previous year once the tournament gets underway again.
Eala lost roughly 380 points following the expirations of the points she earned from her stellar run at the Miami Open last year.(CCM)
