ARMAND “Mondo” Duplantis is in the league of his own.

The Swedish-American pole vaulter put in another world-setting performance and in the process secured his third gold in the World Championship on Monday night, September 15, in Tokyo, Japan.

Duplantis cleared 6.30 meters to his 14th world record as he cruised to his 49th straight meet and fifth straight major title.

The 25-year-old athlete cleared his top height (20 feet, 8 inches) on his third and final try, a feat that earned him $70,000 plus a $100,000 bonus for setting the record at the world championships.

Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena competed in the 36-man field but failed to qualify to the gold-medal round after placing 18th in the preliminaries.

Meanwhile, Filipino hurdler Robyn Brown couldn’t give the country something to celebrate as she failed to make it to the semifinal round.

The 31-year-old Brown timed 57.03, good only for ninth place in the women’s 400m hurdles.(CCM)
