RESIDENTS of Caloocan City have voted to divide Barangay Bagong Silang, the Philippines' most populous barangay, into six smaller and independent barangays.

The decision was ratified through a plebiscite held on Saturday, August 31.

According to the Barangay Plebiscite Board of Canvassers, 22,854 residents voted in favor of the division, while 2,584 opposed it. The Commission on Elections confirmed the results on Sunday morning, September 1.

The plebiscite was conducted to ratify Republic Act No. 11993, which was signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last April 5.

The law officially mandates the division of Barangay Bagong Silang into six distinct barangays: Barangay 176-A, Barangay 176-B, Barangay 176-C, Barangay 176-D, Barangay 176-E, and Barangay 176-F.

Each of the newly formed barangays will have its own barangay chairperson and local officials, ensuring more localized governance and potentially improving the delivery of services to the residents.

Previously, the entire area was managed by a single barangay chairperson, responsible for more than 200,000 residents.

The legislation to divide Barangay Bagong Silang was initially passed by the House of Representatives in November 2022 and subsequently amended by the Senate in December 2023.

The division aims to address the challenges of governing such a large population under a single barangay administration.

The move is expected to enhance administrative efficiency and bring government services closer to the people of Barangay Bagong Silang, now officially segmented into six distinct barangays, each with its own set of leaders and

officials.(MyTVCebu)
